DESCRIPTION
The Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe used funding to advance ongoing riparian and floodplain habitat protection along the Dungeness River near Sequim. The Dungeness River flows out of the Olympic Mountains across a glacial plain (west of Sequim, WA. in Clallam County) and then into the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Over the last century, a significant portion of the Dungeness River's floodplain was disconnected from the river through the construction of levees, roads, and structures. This project conserved Four Dungeness River floodplain properties totaling 21.44 acres with 1.03 miles of river-frontage between RM 6.5 (Hwy 101) and river mile 10.5. All properties are within the channel migration zone, high-quality floodplain forest habitat with side channels, and protection will improve natural riverine and floodplain function. The goal of the project is to assemble critical habitat to reconnect to the Dungeness River, in order to improve spawning and rearing conditions for ESA listed Chinook, bull trout, summer chum, and steelhead, non-listed, coho, pinks, and fall chum as well as creating additional recreation opportunities for fisherman, hikers, and bird watchers. The Tribe completed a 2017 Technical memo of the Tribes greenbook (Recommended Land Protection Strategies for the Dungeness River Riparian Area, August 2003). The memo provides further guidance for land acquisition priority. The four properties the Tribe purchased are prioritized as 3 being high priority for purchase (Caldero, Madison, RL Smith) and one being medium priority for purchase (Jenkins). Additional floodplain properties between river mile 9.5 and 10.5, were added to the project in order to afford appraisal and other due diligence expenses, but the properties themselves were acquired as part of project #16-1367, Dungeness R. Floodplain Restoration-Kinkade Phase. No restoration took place on the properties purchased. However, natural resources staff began efforts planning for restoration of the streambank of the Caldero property acquisition. The Caldero streambank consists of large rip rap to be removed. Lands purchased were not former timber land, but were zoned for single family residents where minimal clearing occurred. The Tribe is looking at restoration and determining if natural seeding of the mature forested area will promote natural recolonization or if the Tribe will need to jump start recolonization and where.
