DESCRIPTION

North Olympic Salmon Coalition used FFFPP funding to restore stream hydrology by removing two undersized failing culverts from Weel Rd on the Sadilek property in Clallam Bay, WA. The culverts were replaced with a 30' long precast steel bridge to restore hydrology along an unnamed tributary to the Clallam River. At the project site a large spring and groundwater wetland complex were bisected by a road and two 24" culverts. Failure of both culverts coupled with blockage of both culverts by beaver activity had isolated the wetland and prevented a hydrological connection to the Clallam river unless water flowed over Weel Rd. The isolated wetland is ideal overwintering habitat for coho salmon. This project re-established a hydrological connection such that juvenile fish are now able to seek refuge in the wetland complex during high flow events in the Clallam River.
