DESCRIPTION
The North Olympic Land Trust partnered with the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe to complete a parcel-specific analysis that prioritized lands in the Elwha River, Little River and Indian Creek watersheds that are most important to restore and maintain physical processes that form critical salmon habitat. The analysis is complete.
In 2014 and 2015, we started to work with landowners in the watersheds regarding their willingness to sell conservation easements. In 2015, we started implementing priority projects, including preliminary title, legal review, preliminary appraisals, and appplying for grant funding. Grant applications were unsuccessful in 2015, and applications have been submitted again in 2016 for PSAR funding in 2017.
This follows the Elwha Fish Recovery Plan recommendations, and was very important to protect recent, large-scale dam removal and restoration investments in the Elwha River and will not only offer protection, but also future restoration possibilities. This project will benefit ESA listed species in the Elwha River, including Chinook, Steelhead and Bulltrout. Non-listed stocks of fish will also benefit, including Coho, Chum, Sockeye, Pink and Cutthroat.
