DESCRIPTION
We constructed 15 ELJ's in the Elwha River phased under a four year construction project. In addition we placed freely place large wood in a 0.5 mile long side channel of the Elwha River The Elwha has been affected by dam construction in the early 20th century which eliminated 90% of the accessible stream habitat and truncated the alluvial transport of sediment and wood necessary for habitat restoration processes. Additionally the lower river has been negatively impacted by channelization, floodplain logging, wood clearing and other human activities. Removal of two hydroelectric dams was initiated in the fall of 2011. Dam removal was completed in the fall of 2014 and fluvially transported wood and sediment is rejuvenating floodplain and estuary habitats throughout the river. This project is an extension of the Tribes comprehensive efforts to restore the floodplain of the lower Elwha prior to dam removal. By the end of the construction season in 2014 the tribe has constructed 50 ELJs, added hundreds of free pieces of LWD to side channels, removed three push up dikes, corrected culvert barriers, planted 30,000 trees and controlled exotic vegetation between River Mile 0-3.0. This project extends restoration activities to a previously untreated portion of the river that has been impacted by historic channelization. This reach has lost significant sinuosity over the last 50 years and is characterized by high velocities and very large substrate. Floodplain habitats in the ELJ treatment reach are responding positively to dam removal and new side channels have been created. Pool structure is reforming following the initial burial of the channel immediately following dam removal. Large wood from upstream sources are being racked on the new ELJ's. ELJ's werer be sited and constructed to provide improved spawning and rearing habitats, reduce velocities and promote lateral connectivity between the mainstem and floodplain. This project has been identified on NOPLEG's three year priority list as the 2nd highest ranking project.
