DESCRIPTION
This grant was used to build wood jams in McDonald Creek from approximately river mile (RM) 1.5 to 1.7 and complete riparian plantings and ivy removal. Work was accomplished in a series of construction phases occurring from 2011 to 2013. McDonald Creek channel structure and complexity have been severely harmed by decades of extensive large wood removal projects. According to the WRIA 18 LFA, "Channel instability between the mouth and Highway 101 is further impacted by LWD depletion" and "Key piece density was poor throughout the lower 9 miles." In 1982 significant removal of wood ceased, but the channel still needs stable wood jams to retain the size-classes of wood that recruit into the system today. Meanwhile, the system is extremely lacking in large deep pools and stable spawning habitat. This project is the second phase of a plan designed to return stable, complex salmonid spawning and rearing habitat to McDonald Creek. Besides the immediate benefits provided by the wood jams, the project recreated the channel structure necessary to allow the retention of naturally recruiting wood. In 2009 the Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe (JS'KT) completed a successful wood jam project in the RM 1.7 to 1.9 reach (Phase 1), indicating a high certainty of success for future projects. The 2009 wood jam project was a collaboration between the JS'KT, the Lower Elwha Tribe, and several landowners using NFWF grant funding.
