DESCRIPTION
The Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe (Tribe) is a co-manager of the fisheries resource in the State of Washington with primary tribal responsibility for the area from the Hoko River on the west to Morse Creek on the east. In addition, the Tribe's Usual and Accustomed Area (U&A) includes the Strait of Juan de Fuca, the San Juan Islands, Admiralty Inlet and the Hood Canal. In the capacity of co-manager of the resource, the Tribe must participate in all forums affecting salmon resources within their U&A - particularly their area of primary responsibility. The Tribe will utilize funding received to fulfill its role as co-manager, including: Participation in development of stock specific recovery plans, development of harvest and hatchery management goals, identification of limiting factors, design and implementation of specific projects targeting limiting factors and other related tasks. Where appropriate, tribal staff will particpate in the review and assessment of local government environmental issues such as local comprehensive plans and development regulations, the use of SEPA, road maintenance standards, the use of herbicides and pesticides, code enforcement/training, critical areas ordinances, stormwater management programs and shoreline management programs.
These tasks will be completed through the establishment of a new biological position within the Tribe. This will be a full-time permanent position.
