DESCRIPTION
The existing levee at Kinkade Island confines the channel for its entire length, greatly increasing stream energy in this reach and downstream reaches. This project will remove between 850 and 950 feet of riprap levee on the west side of Kinkade Island (approx. RM 9.75 on the Dungeness River), install LWD, and revegetate the site with native vegetation. Additionally, a portion of funding requested is for baseline monitoring. This project will directly benefit the reach in which the project occurs, as well as reaches downstream, by reducing overall stream energy, and reconnecting 17 acres of floodplain with the river. The project will be completed during spring low flow from February to April. This schedule will 1) minimize potential mortality of in-gravel eggs due to regrade of the river, 2) lower project costs since it is a time of year when contractors are more available, and 3) allow immediate revegetation of the project site upon completion. The project will benefit the majority of salmonid species in the Dungeness including Chinook, Coho, Summer and Fall Chum, Steelhead, Cutthroat, Dolly Varden and Bull Trout, by decreasing bed scour and allowing a more natural pool/riffle and meandering channel pattern to develop in this area - approx. 1300 ft. of channel length.
