DESCRIPTION
The Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe removed the Woodard Creek culvert and replaced it with a bridge. Nordstrom Creek is a tributary Salt Creek, an independent tributary to the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Coho, steelhead, and cutthroat trout are the species that will benefit from this FFFPP project. Nordstrom Creek is the second largest of the four major Salt Creek tributaries. A watershed analysis completed in 2003 found that culverts were a significant impediment to fish passage in Salt Creek. There are currently five culverts on the mainstem of Nordstrom Creek, four of which are considered problematic for fish passage including the Woodard property culvert on Bishop Road. This undersized culvert forms partial barriers to adult salmon migration and total barriers to juvenile migration. To correct this obstacle the LEKT will manage the removal of the existing culvert, (48" diameter, 0.039 ft/ft slope and ex. 30 LF), and replace it with a pre-fabricated bridge, ( 40' length, 14' wide). Once the bridge is installed the amount of available habitat upstream will be 3,193 ft. Furthermore the project will include construction log jams, log weirs, or rock weirs below and above the newly constructed bridge to help restore fish habitat.
