DESCRIPTION
The Agnew Irrigation District used this funding to pipeline five irrigation laterals (approx. 38,205 ft) to conserve instream flows and improve instream habitat of the Dungeness River, near Sequim in Clallam County, WA. Replacing open irrigation ditches with pipelines has eliminated ditch leakage and evaporation, and thus reduced the amount of water diverted from the river for irrigation, saving an estimated 2.0+ cfs for instream flow. This benefits all salmon stocks that utilize the Dungeness River and its tributaries, notably three ESA-threatened species: spring/summer Chinook, summer chum, and bull trout A secondary benefit of the project is to improve water quality by eliminating the pathway for contaminants to enter the irrigation system through these ditches, which were susceptible to fecal coliform loading. The Dungeness River is on the Department of Ecology's 303(d) list for both low instream flows and fecal coliform (fc) loading.
