DESCRIPTION
The Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe used this funding improve spawning and rearing conditions for coho salmon, chum salmon and steelhead trout in the East Twin River and its major tributary, Sadie Creek. This project placed large wood in the river and creek using ground-based and helicopter. In 2001 and 2002 we used ground-based equipment to place wood at 35 sites in East Twin River between river mile 0.3 and 2.0. This was followed by a helicopter placement project in the fall of 2002 for inaccessible portions of the drainage and included the East Twin River (miles 2.0 to 3.0) and Sadie Creek (river miles 0.2 to1.8). On a single flight, a leased Chinook helicopter placed 35 key pieces (weighing between 15,000-30,000 pounds each) in upper East Twin and 75 key pieces and or cut logs into Sadie Creek. Additionally the project planted one mile of riparian stream bank along the East Twin River with native conifers to improve habitat values and large wood recruitment over time.
