DESCRIPTION
The Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe used this funding for the Elwha River Floodplain Restoration project, which was the second of a series of projects. Completed in 2003, this project was originally envisioned as three separate sub-projects. Due to cost constraints only mainstem engineered logjams (ELJs) were actually implemented. A total of seven ELJs were installed on the main stem of the river between 2002-2003. These logjams were considered large and robust at the time and became the site of efforts to monitoring ELJ effectiveness studies funded by the SRFB in the mid-2000s. The logjam designs incorporated large diameter conifers with rootwads (key pieces) and used 40-60 pieces of wood per logjam. The logjams were subjected to large flood events in 2006 and 2008 and performed well. The goals of the project were to provide immediate habitat for multiple species of salmon including listed populations of Chinook, steelhead, and bull trout. A secondary goal was to improve habitat-forming processes by increasing the interaction of the river and its floodplain.
