DESCRIPTION
Estimated breakdown of Budget
SFRB - $50,000 ESRP - $57,000 NRCS WRP - $195,000 for construction of dike and dike removal, WDFW LIP riparian grant- $43,000
This project restored key habitat forming processes and functions of historic estuarine habitats in the Union River Estuary. The salt marsh complex is protected in perpetuity as property of the Great Peninsula Conservancy. GPC has enrolled the area in a WRP easement, which will enabled the NRCS to sponsor design and partial implementation of the restoration of the area. The SRFB project provided additional funds to complete the restoration.
During the mid-1900s, this salt marsh area was modified with a dike and borrow ditch to support agricultural activities. Historical maps, aerial photos and Lidar survey have shown that several tidal channels were severed with the construction of 1300 feet of dike and 13 acres of salt marsh were lost to production.
The dike was removed by side-casting material back into the borrow ditches, several previous tidal channels have been reestablished as part of the salt marsh reclamation. Revegetation of the area is occurring through natural processes as there is sufficient source material in adjacent areas.
The project has allowed complete tidal inundation, natural tidal formation, improved exotic species control, and improved revegetation to a high salt marsh community.
