Acquire and restore 0.32 acres of at-risk Chimacum Creek mainstem and forested riparian habitat, including steep slopes that have been subject to some erosion and will be enhanced by additional conifer underplanting, planting of slope stabilizing shrubs and continued removal of invasive species that are impacting forest health. Previous residential use of the larger parcel in Tier #1 created a slump of the slope above Chimacum Creek and the prime spawning grounds and required major clean-up on the part of the County and EPA. These two parcels and the adjoining WDFW properties were platted in the 1880s into 25'x100' lots. Planting of the floodplain and riparian forest above the creek with tree and understory species will augment habitat, reduce erosion and resulting siltation of the creek and help recharge groundwater.  Habitat quality for cold water fish is a primary driver of the protection of Chimacum Creek. Preserving the riparian corridor and surrounding forested slopes and restoring where needed is an effective way to shade and cool the creek as much as possible and preserve its spawning and rearing habitat for salmonids and other species. These parcels are contiguous with WDFW lands on two sides, and will allow for more effective management and control of public access. This project aligns with the Hood Canal Salmon Recovery Program which states that protection of highly functioning habitat is listed as a 2023 Priorities and Immediate Needs in Chimacum Creek.
