DESCRIPTION
Acquire and protect up to 30 acres of estuarine wetland and forested wetland habitat in the Union River estuary near Belfair, WA. Along with the acquisitions, conceptual designs will be developed to address the removal of a dike and restore tidal channels on one of the acquired properties. The Union River watershed is surrounded by major roads and residential developments. Many anthropogenic barriers have led to wetland loss. The proposed project will acquire up to 30 acres of wetland and estuarine habitat in the southern part of the estuary. This acquisition will complement WDFW's 181-acre acquisition of similar habitat in the Union River estuary (slated for transfer in February 2023). The result will be an expansion of the WDFW-managed Union Wildlife area, totaling approximately 700 acres of protected estuary, freshwater wetlands, and forested floodplain. The project will begin and set the stage for future restoration in Lower Hood Canal watershed that addresses constraints imposed by dikes and the highway on hydrologic connectivity, fish passage, and wetland habitat quality.
