DESCRIPTION
Jefferson Land Trust used this funding to partner with other organizations and achieve the perpetual protection of over 3 miles of streams and 245 acres of prime estuarine and riparian habitat for summer chum, other salmon species, forage fish, and wildlife in the Salmon and Snow Creek Estuary. This estuary is the most intact of its type on the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Located at the head of Discovery Bay in East Jefferson County, it is the stronghold of the ESA-listed Strait of Juan de Fuca summer chum salmon, with large numbers of fish returning already every year. This project protected eight parcels, a total of 245 acres, with restoration on the estuary and replanting on Snow and Salmon Creeks in conjunction with our project partners: WA Dept. of Fish and Wildlife, Jefferson County Conservation District, North Olympic Salmon Coalition, Wild Olympic Salmo, and Jefferson County. Five of the eight parcels are now owned by WDFW and the Jefferson Land Trust holds conservation easements the remaining three. The project fit well with the Hood Canal Coordinating Council Strategy for Salmon Recovery, which highlights estuary and nearshore habitats as Tier I for acquisition. Critical habitat acquisition is number one on their sequenced project lists for both Salmon and Snow Creek watersheds.
