DESCRIPTION
NWI proposes to fully restore and permanently protect this highly impacted shoreline property to provide high quality nearshore habitat as part of the larger Dabob Bay Natural Area. NWI plans to acquire the 17 acre property and then fully restore the shoreline by removing all structures and roads, removing the bulkhead and fill, restoring site topography, and re-vegetating the site with native tree and shrub species.
Northwest Watershed Institute (NWI), in partnership with Washington Department of Natural Resources (DNR), proposes to acquire and permanently protect 17 acres of nearshore habitat, marine shoreline, and associated feeder bluff within the state's Dabob Bay Natural Area boundaries. Phase II of the project, to be proposed after acquisition, will fully restore the shoreline by removing one of the largest bulkheads remaining in Hood Canal that directly buries nearshore habitat and impacts sediment deliver processes maintaining nearby coastal salt marsh spits and habitats. The project will permanently protect and restore documented rearing habitat for juvenile Hood Canal summer chum salmon and Puget Sound Chinook, both federal listed as Threatened species.
