Mason Conservation District proposes to implement the acquisition and construction phase of a restoration project that will restore a 1.6 mile reach of mainstem Skokomish River. This project will result in restoration of critical Chinook and summer chum habitat by installing 22 main channel engineered log jams, acquiring a 46.49 acre floodplain parcel, creating 0.9 miles of new side channel, enhancing connection to 2.26 miles of side channel through forested floodplain habitat and installing 13 wood structures within the new channel. Restoration of lower mainstem Skokomish River habitat is vital to the recovery of Puget Sound Chinook and Hood Canal summer chum. This project is the final component of channel enhancement work that connects multiple habitat restoration projects, sponsored by the US Army Corps of Engineers, Mason County, the Skokomish Tribe and Mason CD, which begins at River Mile 4.1 and continue through River Mile 10.7. This project will help restore normative channel processes by improving sediment dynamics (strategic storage, stabilization, and transport), increasing the complexity of channel morphology and improving the hydraulic connection between mainstem, floodplain, and side channel habitats.
