This restoration project is located between mileposts 3.8 and 4.6 of Skokomish Valley Road in the South Fork Skokomish channel and floodplain. Historically, this area had meanders, side channels, and oxbow channels providing channel complexity and off-channel habitat, but these habitat features were disconnected for the construction of the Skokomish Valley Road in the early 1900s. The current configuration and elevation of the road infrastructure create multiple challenges for salmonid species including: 1) Limiting salmonid access to a forested, and spring fed, floodplain wetland complex that could serve as critical summer and winter rearing and refugia habitat. 2) Creating migration, survival, and stranding challenges when floodplain connection is limited to the roadway itself during frequently occurring flow levels. 3) Simplified river banks to protect road infrastructure. This project will improve instream habitat complexity and improve floodplain connection in this critical reach of the river to support Chinook and summer chum recovery efforts. This will be accomplished by installing engineered log jams, developing a side channel connection to floodplain habitat, and installing water conveyance structures to facilitate floodplain connection, and strategically elevating Skokomish Valley Road in this location.
