DESCRIPTION
This project will remove over 900 linear feet of shoreline armor and concrete debris from an abandoned 100-year old railroad grade and will improve nearshore spawning habitat conditions for forage fish through the addition of approximately 2,000 tons of beach nourishment material. The site is located near the start of a drift cell that is over 1.4 miles in length moving from north to south towards the head of Discovery Bay.
This project will remove over 900 linear feet of shoreline armor and concrete debris from an abandoned 100-year old railroad grade and will improve nearshore spawning habitat conditions for forage fish through the addition of approximately 1,000 tons of beach nourishment material. The site is located on the southeast shore of Discovery Bay near the start of a drift cell that is over 4.5 miles in length moving from north to south towards Snow Creek. The project will result in: removal of 5,600 tons of anthropogenic material that buried the mid-upper intertidal and backshore beach; restoration of a natural backshore; and restoration of feeder bluff processes. The restored beach will have added complexity and will be suitable for forage fish spawning and will improve nearshore conditions for migrating juvenile salmonids (including Chinook, Summer chum, and coho). This funding request is specific to those sections of the project where full armor removal can occur and includes supplementation of beach nourishment material for improved forage fish spawning habitat.
