DESCRIPTION
Puget Sound Action Agenda. Shoreline armor removal is included in the Puget Sound Action Agenda as a strategic initiative. Armor removal is a priority action throughout Puget Sound.
This restoration project, located on the southeast shore of Discovery Bay, will result in removal of anthropogenic material that buried the mid-upper intertidal and backshore beach, re-creation of potential forage fish spawning areas, re-creation of a natural backshore with drift logs and salt-tolerant backshore vegetation, and less wave reflection and beach scour. NW Straits Foundation will remove shore armor and scattered debris by barge along 900 linear feet of shoreline to expose a sand and gravel beach, then add beach nourishment material suitable for forage fish spawning to offset the negative historical impacts of the railroad bed on the drift cell and accelerate habitat recovery. The restored beach will be suitable for forage fish spawning and improve nearshore habitats useful for migrating juvenile salmonids (including Chinook, Chum, and Coho), shellfish, and shore birds. Armor and debris removal will also allow for natural recruitment of large woody debris and landward translation of habitats and species to accommodate sea level rise.
