DESCRIPTION
Jefferson Land Trust is requesting funds to preserve our top priority ~ 25-acre property - the last privately-held parcel along the south side of the Duckabush River located on the west side of the Hood Canal. This property includes intact mainstem habitat, channel migration zone, floodplain and side channel habitat, as well as steep-slope forest with mature native species. A seasonal stream drains the upland forest into the wetland side-channel habitat. The property is zoned residential and could be developed for one home under current county regulations. It is directly adjacent to a Jefferson Land Trust Preserve and Olympic National Forest land. We will seek to purchase the fee interest in the property, though will also consider purchase of a conservation easement depending on landowner willingness. The South shore of this reach is more natural (less developed) than the north shore and this project would prevent logging and expanded rural residential uses. Property owners on the north side of the river adjacent to Jefferson Land Trust Preserves will also be contacted to determine interest in preserving the mainstem riparian habitat located on their parcels, which we consider as second priority. If there is interest and funding available we will purchase conservation easements on the riparian buffer areas to prevent tree removal and negative impacts from further development.
