DESCRIPTION
The Skokomish Tribal Nation used this funding in its efforts to improve the diversity and value of habitat in the Big Quilcene River in the reach of river miles 2.04 to 2.37. The Quilcene River contains ESA-listed Hood Canal summer run chum, fall chum, coho, steelhead and coastal cutthroat. This project completed acquisition of 15.8 acres of property adjacent to the south bank of the Big Quilcene River. Such acquisition was deemed necessary to support long-term conservation of the landscape and led to completing the preliminary restoration project design. This project was a logical progression of a 2002 SRFB grant that funded the December 2004, Quilcene River Reach Analysis and Feasibility Study, Big Quilcene River, River Mile 1.8 to River Mile 2.7, by Herrera Environmental Consultants. The remaining restoration component shifted to a different sponsor, the Hood Canal Salmon Enhancement Group (HCSEG), under a new project agreement (RCO #09-1706).
