DESCRIPTION
The Skokomish Tribe used this funding to to conserve 5 acres of riparian, floodplain, and channel habitats in the lower Big Quilcene Watershed through fee-simple purchase. The existing habitat is high quality riparian vegetation and floodplain. While it also offers opportunities for channel and bank restoration on approximately 1,200 feet of shoreline, there does not appear to be an immediate need for this. The land is now owned and maintained in perpetuity by the Skokomish Indian Tribe for the purpose of salmon habitat protection and salmon recovery, and additional protection of shellfish resources downstream. This project fits into a larger habitat restoration program developed under several previous SRFB-funded projects for projects upstream. Quilcene Bay is also benefiting by removing the threat of development on this property accessed by Clay Banks Road, thereby addressing sediment delivery into the Big Quilcene River and further downstream into Quilcene Bay's shellfish resources.
