DESCRIPTION
This project is for land acquisition of at least 2.5 acres (11 residential lots) on the north bank of the Quilcene River at about RM 0.5. It implements top habitat restoration priorities for the Quilcene River from key salmon recovery plans (the Summer Chum Conservation Initiative and the HCCC Salmon Recovery Strategy). The acquisition moves restoration of the lower Quilcene River a step closer toward completion, which will improve habitat for threatened summer chum and Puget Sound chinook, along with coho, steelhead and cutthroat. The acquisition will occur at a reach of the Quilcene River heavily used by summer chum salmon for spawning, and links to previous acquisition and restoration that has occured downstream.
The project includes the purchase of three contiguous parcels from three willing landowners, and the demolition of one home. The subject parcels, once acquired, will comprise a portion of nearly continuous public ownership along the north bank from the river mouth to Rogers Street (about RM 0.6). Only two residences will remain on the north bank. After completion of the north bank acquisitions, dike setback/removal can occur, which will reduce high winter velocities, scouring and channel aggradation, improve river-floodplain connections, create habitat complexity, and create support for further salmon restoration and recovery activities in the watershed.
