DESCRIPTION
The Hood Canal Salmon Enhancement Group (HCSEG) purchased 18 parcels within the lower Big Quilcene River. These 18 parcels represented most of the last remaining unprotected land of the lower river, and were critical to completing the last stages of this multi-phased restoration effort in Quilcene Bay. This was a fee simple acquisition of approximately 30 acres and included the demolition and removal of structures and derelict equipment. The project was located in Jefferson County in the town of Quilcene. The project area is located within T27NR02WS24 and T27NR01WS19. The acquisition provided protection from further development in the lower segment of the river and provided the opportunity to remove current development impacts (structures, derelict equipment, fill material, etc.). The project now protects estuarine tidelands and saltmarsh, and river riparian associated with the river channel and the river floodplain. The project area specifically benefits multiple salmon species (chinook, coho, fall chum, summer chum, pink) which use the area, as well as coastal cutthroat, steelhead and bull trout. The land acquisition and restoration area supports Bald eagle, harbor seal, and waterfowl concentrations. Seventeen contiguous parcels comprised the restoration. All parcels are protected.
