DESCRIPTION
Salmon Creek flows into Discovery Bay and is utilized by a stock of ESA listed summer chum salmon. Spawning monitoring data by WDFW indicates that habitat conditions are limiting to the sustainability of summer chum. This reach encompasses the main spawning area for summer chum. Project objective is to restore natural stream functions and improve salmon habitat in a reach channelized many years ago for agriculture purposes. Project activities address limiting factors identified in co-manager (WDFW/Tribes) conservation initiative, including restoration of channel complexity (LWD, channel stability/condition), reducing aggradation, replacing livestock ford w/bridge, improving riparian conditions. Target species is summer chum though coho, cutthroat, steelhead, sturgeon will also benefit. Monitoring data (water quality, spawning counts, otolith analysis) has been collected for several years. This monitoring will be continued as a part of project. Project is supported by the landowners, Wild Olympic Salmon, Jefferson Conservation District, North Olympic Salmon Coalition and WDFW. This project compliments the Wild Olympic Salmon/WDFW Salmon Creek/Chimacum Creek Summer Chum Stock Supplementation Project. Total project reach extends from SR101 upstream approximately 2800 ft. Implementation will occur by the Conservation District in cooperation w/WDFW. Timeframe: Design - 2000; Construction - 2000 & 2001; Monitoring/maintenance - 2000-2005.
