DESCRIPTION
Jefferson Land Trust will use this grant to acquire over 3.25 acres to protect salmonid habitat. Noxious weeds will be removed from these acres. The project area is located in Jefferson County, adjacent to Chimacum Creek, east of Highway 19. The acquisition of numerous small parcels will help conserve the ecological integrity and biological diversity of the Chimacum Creek estuary by protecting parcels containing critical riparian habitats and linking these parcels to existing public lands. The primary habitat that will be protected is riparian and forested uplands. Approximately 3.25 acres of riparian and steep slope forested upland will be acquired. The primary species supported by these habitats are Endangered Species Act listed anadromous fish including summer chum, coho, fall chum, and steelhead. This acquisition effort has been identified as a high priority for Jefferson Land Trust who has worked closely with Jefferson County, and Chumsortium partners to secure funding and other support for this project. This project builds upon the Land Trust, WDFW and Jefferson County land holdings totaling over 150 acres in the Chimacum Creek Lower Mainstem area.
