DESCRIPTION
The purpose of the Skokomish River Ecosystem Restoration General Investigation is to evaluate significant ecosystem degradation in the Skokomish River Basin (completed); to formulate, evaluate, and screen potential solutions to these problems (completed); and to recommend a series of actions and projects that have a Federal interest and are supported by the local community. This effort is now in its final phase, which is to complete feasibility-level (35%) designs and an environmental impact statement with public review and present them to Congress for funding.
This project funded the completion of the Skokomish General Investigation feasibility report and environmental impact statement (including preliminary designs). The Seattle Branch of the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), along with Mason County and Skokomish Tribe representatives, presented the project at USACE HQ in Washington, DC, and the project was approved by the USACE Civil Works Review Board. The feasibility report and environmental impact statement were also presented by USACE for review by Washington State and federal agencies. The USACE also submitted a report to Congress to request federal funding for preliminary engineering and construction of the 5 recommended restoration projects. The preferred alternative (5 recommended restoration projects) were authorized by congress, and a Preconstruction, Engineering and Design (PED) agreement has been executed between the USACE and the local sponsors. This grant also helped support the beginning stages of the PED phase, ongoing landowner outreach, and partner coordination while the 2017 capital budget was delayed.
