The project acquired a conservation easement on the 22.5-acre Gregory Property (1-acre building envelope) containing high value main stem and off-channel habitat for Puget Sound Chinook, summer and fall chum and odd-year pink salmon. It also acquired the 1.08-acre Bowers and 0.68 Nesset properties fee simple on the Dosewallips River floodplain and, in the case of the Nesset parcel, adjacent slope. These properties include main stem, side channel and floodplain habitat that supports the same salmonid species. The Gregory property was thought not to include the "island" between the river and main stem and so the final acquired acreage is largely than originally anticipated. This project supports salmon habitat by protecting natural vegetation and soils, re-establishing conifer species, preventing shoreline armoring, reducing expansion of impervious surfaces and invasive weed populations, allowing for channel migration, and enhancing opportunities for habitat restoration - in particular the potential placement of ELJs such as the installations described in the Wild Fish Conservancy Northwest’s Duckabush River Restoration 2012 draft designs. Matching funds are from Jefferson County's fee simple acquisition of a 0.3 acre parcel located within the riparian zone of the Dosewallips River. Completed project objectives include placement of a conservation easement on three Gregory parcels (through a partnership with the Jefferson Land Trust), fee-simple acquisition of two in-holdings on the Dosewallips floodplain, removal of one Gregory cabin nearest the riparian area, removal/decommissioning of one on-site holding tank and decommissioning of two additional on-site systems, removal of invasive Himalayan blackberry and tansy ragwort, and planting and maintenance of conifers on riparian and in-forested upland areas of the Gregory, Berntsen, Selfridge and Fulton properties. Elk exclusion fencing was installed around eight western red cedars on the Berntsen property which had been browsed repeatedly. BPA installed an entrance gate to the Berntsen property beneath the powerlines and Jefferson County together with Jefferson Land Trust installed a small parking area outside of the gate and entrance signage.
