DESCRIPTION
This restoration project is located below the Lake Symington Dam in the Intensively Monitored Watershed, Big Beef Creek in Kitsap County, WA. The primary goal of this project was to restore properly functioning floodplain and channel conditions and improve spawning, rearing and egg incubating habitat particularly for salmonids (chum, Coho and steelhead) and cutthroat trout in Big Beef Creek. The Lower Big Beef Creek Restoration Project took place over a 3 year period of time and benefited from additional Intensively Monitored Watershed funds that were twice amended into the original contract in order to increase the original scope of work. This project, which encompassed 3.8 miles of habitat in the lower Big Beef Creek watershed, had five major habitat objectives: 1. Channel reconfiguration to reconnect 11.4 acres of off channel habitat. This project element was completed by the removal of a 2500 foot long elevated road that had been built through the Big Beef Creek floodplain. This road removal resulted in 1600 cubic yards of fill material being removed from the floodplain and the re-connection of 11.4 acres of wetland habitat to the mainstem. 2. Restoration of 0.9 acres of wetland habitat by removal of 2 structures and 5,263 cubic yards of fill material. An additional benefit of his wetland restoration was that it reconnected the 11.4 acres of wetland stated above to the mainstem on the lower end of the wetland. 3. Increase channel complexity by placing 48 structures over 19.5 acres of in-stream habitat. These 48 structures resulted in the formation of 48 pools throughout the 3.8 miles of habitat treated. 4. Riparian invasive weeds were controlled on 0.737 acres over 9.5 miles of stream. Additionally, Re-vegetation of the riparian area took place on 8 acres over 3.4 stream miles. 5. Relocation of utilities in order to continue service to the UW and WDFW facilities on the property. An additional objective that was not met was fencing 0.3 stream miles in order to exclude livestock. This portion of the project was not completed because the landowner resolved the fencing issue on their own. In lieu of fencing, HCSEG completed an additional 3 acres of riparian plantings that are already included in objective 4 above.
