DESCRIPTION
The project combined with efforts put forth in Phase I (East Jefferson Summer Chum Riparian 09-1657) to increase the acreage of riparian plantings to restore critical ESA-listed Hood Canal Summer Chum habitat. This restoration project led to: 1.) site-prep and implementation of 38 acres of new riparian planting projects and site stewardship of 250 acres of existing riparian plantings 2.) Four miles of invasive, non-native vegetation inventory and control on Chimacum Creek and other salmon bearing streams. Although we planted fewer acres than originally planned since we had less landowner participation than anticipated, we were able to conduct site stewardship and improve the condition of existing riparian stewardship on over 250 acres of riparian habitat within the project area. The outreach work with landowners that we conduct as part of this project has also led to increased interest in landowners that will have plantings conducted in 2019, during Phase III of this project. The program will hire a Washington State Conservation Corps (WCC) crew over a multi-year period to implement riparian restoration and maintenance projects across multiple watersheds in the Hood Canal Summer Chum ESU. This project will provide habitat benefits to ESA-listed Hood Canal Summer Chum and ESA-listed Puget Sound Steelhead.
