DESCRIPTION
Jefferson County acquired the Brown, James, Henderson, Holt and Rundquist properties fee simple. Together they total 4.05 acres. Structures on the Henderson property were demolished, the site was treated for invasive species and native vegetation was replanted. In addition, the Bergeson, Gallagher, Phelps and Whittaker properties were appraised using this funding source. Gallagher was later acquired with 2015 SRFB funds. Bergeson and Phelps declined the County's offer to purchase. Whittaker is still pending at the time of this report. The acquisition area is considered essential to long-term restoration goals for the Big Quilcene River and estuary. The parcels are located within the historic high-risk channel migration zone in close proximity, or adjacent, to properties previously acquired in by Jefferson County. The properties are identified in the Puget Sound Nearshore Ecosystem Restoration Project Final Conceptual Design Report (PSNERP March 2011 Chapter 3) for restoration measures to improve the integrity and resilience of the nearshore ecosystem of Hood Canal. This project was also intended to complement the HCSEG Big Quilcene Delta Acquisition Project funded by the SRFB in 2011. The ultimate goal was to support high quality riparian habitat for Hood Canal Summer Chum by returning disturbed lands to healthy riparian forest as part of an activated floodplain and channel migration zone.
