Jefferson Land Trust purchased a 15.5 acre parcel (Snow Creek Uncas Preserve) on Snow Creek for protection of important salmon habitat. Restoration included conifer planting in the bigleaf-maple and alder-dominated understory. Noxious weeds have managed to allow native species to proliferate. Over 250 local students and dozens of community volunteers have participated in this protection and restoration effort, including conducting habitat and stream conditions inventories, planting trees, removing noxious weeds, and conducting regular site monitoring. The property is located in Jefferson County at the junction of Highway 101 and West Uncas Road. The acquisition permanently protects wild riparian salmon habitat and benefits water quality in Snow Creek and Discovery Bay. The parcel contains approximately 12 acres of forested riparian and wetland habitat, 3 of adjacent upland with 1400' of Snow Creek in stream habitat. Salmon species that utilize the forested riparian habitat of Snow Creek include the endangered Summer Chum, Coho salmon, cutthroat and steelhead trout. Chumsortium partner organizations have been working together since 2001 to protect, restore and enhance Salmon and Snow Creek watersheds located at the head of Discovery Bay. Over 360 acres of critical riparian, estuarine and wetland habitat and agricultural lands located downstream to the property are permanently protected through WDFW fee ownership and conservation easements with JLT. Chumsortium partners identified this parcel as important for permanent protection and restoration efforts. The project fits well with the Hood Canal Coordinating Council Strategy for Salmon Recovery. Critical habitat acquisition is number one on their sequenced project lists for both Salmon and Snow Creek watersheds.
