DESCRIPTION
Kitsap County used this funding to contract with Battelle Marine Science Laboratory, who produced the West Kitsap Addendum to the East Kitsap County Nearshore Habitat Assessment and Prioritization Framework (Judd, 2010).
The marine nearshore of Kitsap County plays a critical role in the recovery of salmon populations in Puget Sound and Hood Canal. The nearshore functions were quantified for the 155 miles of the West Kitsap Shoreline in a field survey conducted in 2007. The data collected was consolidated into an assessment framework that is based on a conceptual model that integrates the best available science for nearshore ecosystems. This project completed the nearshore habitat assessment and used the similar assessment methodology for the west Kitsap Shoreline along Hood Canal.
The overall goal was to provide information on West Kitsap Hood Canal shoreline conditions so the county can have a strategic approach to habitat protection and prioritization. The modeling serves to summarize the nearshore ecological functions and inform future habitat projects. The nearshore assessment also provides information for updating the Shoreline Master Program.
