DESCRIPTION
The Hood Canal Salmon Enhancement Group used this funding to continue work with Kitsap County and the University of Washington to keep the University of Washington Fisheries Research Station at Big Beef Creek as an active fisheries research center that can be used to develop and conduct research on wild Hood Canal Salmon. This grant funded the completion of Phase 3. Previously, the project completed the following: Phase 1: Constructed spawning channel ($175,000 total project cost) Phase 2: Constructed new 1,200 GPM well near laboratory facilities ($100,000 total project cost) This project, Phase 3, completed the following: 1. Removed a portion of the roadway to the existing water supply well and reconnected the 30-acre wetland on the west side of Big Beef Creek (just upstream of the research facilities) to the creek. The natural functions of this wetland, including sediment entrapment, had been altered by the road. 2. Installed piping water from the new well to the laboratory. 3. Lined the lower 200 feet of the spawning channel with large cobble to prevent erosion by the spawning salmon and installed new intake and outlet valves to improve facility functions.
