DESCRIPTION
Schoolhouse Creek is a tributary to the Tahuya River estuary. Historically, the Tahuya River system had a summer chum run which has been extirpated. In addition, Tahuya River chinook stocks have also declined and efforts are underway to rebuild chinook numbers. The lower reach of Schoolhouse Creek is low gradient with year round flow but is inaccessible to salmon due to an undersized and perched culvert. The existing culvert is 72"x47" cmp arch with a 1.5 foot drop at the downstream end and no plunge pool. Existing gravels upstream of the culvert are good and would be available to summer chum for about 0.5 miles, at which time gradient might become a barrier. A total of 2.35 miles would be opened up for other species, such as coho and steelhead. This project is slated for start and completion during summer/fall 1999.
