DESCRIPTION
Hood Canal Salmon Enhancement Group partnered with the Olympic National Forest on this road-decommissioning project designed to minimize road-related delivery of coarse sediment inputs to resident and anadromous spawning and rearing habitat in Brown Creek and the lower South Fork of the Skokomish River. Work completed included 3.5 miles of road decommissioning work on Forest Service Road (FSR) 2354300 and elimination (no treatment) of 0.7 miles of FSR 2354310. Treatments included: · Removal of culverts at 6 large stream crossings with placement of instream channel rock steps; · Removal of 19 culverts ranging in size from 18 - 24 inches; · Removal of road fill material at 6 large stream crossings and 18 other culverts totals over 16,000 cubic yards; · Construction of 8 drainage swales and 58 cross ditches; · Sidecast fillslope pullback totaling 100 cubic yards; · 2-3 foot deep scarification along 3.5 miles of roadway · application of seed and weed free mulch. Crews removed invasive weeds using manual methods for FSR 2354300 prior to construction work. These roads were identified in the Olympic National Forest Road Analysis as very high risk to aquatic resources. Species of fish and life history stages utilizing this reach are bull trout -adult and sub-adult holding and overwintering; steelhead spawning, incubation, juvenile rearing and migration. Other salmon and trout species that utilize the lower river are Chinook, coho, summer chum, chum, steelhead, bull trout, and sea-run cutthroat. The project enhances critical bull trout and steelhead spawning and rearing habitat.
