DESCRIPTION
The Dosewallips River contains some of the most important and highest quality salmonid habitat in eastern Jefferson County, as identified by the Eastern Jefferson County Refugia Study and the HCCC Salmon Recovery strategy. The project will permanently protect critical instream habitat and floodplain connections through acquisition. This will prevent future habitat degradation and will provide an opportunity for threatened stocks to maintain spawning populations in the Dosewallips River. For the Dosewallips Floodplain Acquisition project, we propose the acquisition of roughly 93 acres of riparian and floodplain habitat comprising about ¾ mile of river length with critical salmonid habitat. The project is located about 1 ½ miles upstream from the mouth, just west of Brinnon. The acquisition proposed includes an entire river reach that has a complex floodplain, substantial woody debris, side channels and tributaries used as spawning and rearing habitat. The project will acquire a reach of the Dosewallips River with the highest spawning use by threatened Puget Sound chinook in some years, which is also used for spawning by threatened Hood Canal summer chum and coho salmon. In addition, the high quality habitat is used by steelhead, pink salmon and cutthroat trout. This project will address a critical need for protection and restoration of salmonid stocks by cost-effectively protecting habitat in perpetuity.
