DESCRIPTION
The Hood Canal Salmon Enhancement Group, in cooperation with the Washington Department of Natural Resources (DNR), completed a habitat inventory on the Union, Tahuya, and Dewatto systems. The systems are habitat for summer and fall chum, Chinook, coho, and steelhead. The project used protocols established by the DNR on Hoh River tributaries measuring large woody debris abundance and characteristics, pool surface area, and depth. The data from all reaches of the systems was used to identify stream segments lacking large woody debris. These segments were studied to assess potential for large wood retention. This project designed, permitted and completed three bank stabilization projects--one each on the Dewatto, Tahuya, and Union Rivers. They included the placement of large woody debris and replanting. In addition, four stream gauge stations and one precipitation station were installed.
