DESCRIPTION
The Skokomish Tribe used this funding to acquire over 100 acres of lower river floodplain habitat in the Skokomish Valley. Acquisition site includes a large portion of Purdy-Weaver Wetland (PWW) in lower Skokomish Valley, and about a mile of the Skokomish River. In 1854, F.C. Purdy arrived at Hood Canal and was the first settler at middle Skokomish. William Bourgault acquired the Purdy farm in the late 40's. The Bourgault family sold land they owned on the south side of the Skokomish River. The Skokomish borders the property on the north and east, and the Purdy-Weaver Wetland complex is the south edge and flows east to Skokomish. Hay fields and timbered wetlands are between. The people of Skokomish Indian Nation, the first inhabitants, know the value of this property to the health of the Skokomish watershed and Hood Canal. Chinook, chum, coho, cutthroat, and steelhead presently spawn and/or rear in the streams on site. Bull trout are also present in the Skokomish, and it is believed there may be an anadromous population as well. ESA-listed summer chum historically spawned in Purdy Creek, and the Skokomish watershed historically possessed a pink salmon population. A small type 3 stream flows to the Purdy-Weaver Wetland from the south. Plant and animal communities are diverse and abundant. PWW offers refuge to many types of animals, including the Pacific salmon.
