DESCRIPTION
The Hood Canal Salmon Enhancement Group undertook this project because of the concern by the tribal commercial fishermen and scuba divers' reports of ghost nets in Hood Canal. Ghost nets within Hood Canal have negatively impacted the activity and populations of animals in the marine environment for years. These remnants of commercial fishing activities within Hood Canal have been documented to continually take numbers of seabirds, marine mammals, crabs, and benthic and anadromous fishes.
Locating the ghost nets involved a joint effort between the Skokomish fishermen, Keyport, WDFW and Battelle. Anecdotal information for all of Hood Canal was collected. Once areas were identified, the project prioritized recovery efforts to primarily to benefit salmon. With side scan equipment supplied by Keyport, these locations were surveyed to validate the anecdotal information. We produced a GIS database that shows confirmed locations as well as possible locations from data contributed by divers, fishermen, and community members. Keyport, Hood Canal Salmon Enhancement Group, and the Skokomish Tribe supplied the materials and staffing needed to remove ghost nets. Experienced divers conducted a pilot project to help establish protocols for removal process. This pilot project helped establish methods for better, timelier lost net retrieval.
