DESCRIPTION
Gamble Creek contains excellent coho and chum rearing habitat and limited spawning habitat. Farming practices impact major portions of the creek. At these impacted areas the creek is trampled by animals, straightened, poorly vegetated, temperatures are above normal, and fecal coliform concentrates are high. Following long-term negotiations conducted by the Kitsap Conservation District, some of these landowners are now willing to allow restoration. The Conservation District (a sub-division of state government responsible for private lands) has identified three parcels as high priority construction during summer 2000. These opportunities may be fleeting and we seek to proceed as soon as possible. We intend to establish conservation easements, re-meander approximately 350 feet of Gamble Creek, and install over 50 logs and root wads plus 70 cubic yards of spawning gravel. We would create access to an additional 1-acre of flood plain and plant 2.9-acres with native species such as cedar ,dogwood, alder, willow, twinberry, indian plum, and other local species. Our goal is to improve pool riffle run ratios including the creation of undercut banks and spawning areas in keeping with reference reaches that we have in detail. Project monitoring and adjustments shall be made for a minimum of 3 years following construction.
