DESCRIPTION
The project will engage key landowners in development of a conservation plan for the Martha John Creek estuary and lower reach of the creek. Martha John Creek has a relatively pristine estuary; coho and fall chum spawn in the lower creek below 288th Street, south of Little Boston.
Project will include conservation, restoration, and stewardship components. Landowners will be contacted individually to engage them in discussion of the importance of Martha John Creek to salmon conservation, watershed protection, and long-term health of Port Gamble Bay and Hood Canal. Landowner participation will be voluntary and conservation strategies will be tailored to meet the needs of individual landowners, including conservation easements, fee title conservation, and on-site restoration. As discussions with landowners reach consensus on conservation strategies appropriate for individual parcels, these actions will be included in the strategic conservation plan. The plan will serve as the basis for future conservation actions by Great Peninsula Conservancy (a landowner on the creek), Port Gamble S'Klallam Tribe, and other partners to ensure protection of this relatively pristine estuary and fish-bearing creek.
