The Squaxin Island Tribe acquired fee simple ownership of two properties totaling 264.5 acres and 4.17 miles of stream. This includes 0.93 miles of mainstem Skookum Creek, 250.2 acres of riparian, and 115.2 acres of wetlands. The conserved properties provide high quality habitat for coho, chum, and steelhead and cutthroat trout. A scope change was enacted after the owner of the Port Blakely property offered to more than doubled in size the property they were willing to sell. The first purchase was the 164 acre Skookum Ranch property. This consisted of 63.4 acres of riparian and 100.6 acres of wetlands. The second purchase was the 100.5 acre Port Blakely property. This consisted of 85.3 acres of riparian and 15.2 acres of wetlands. The owner of the Reller property, would not commit to a purchase and sale agreement after numerous attempts. This 108 acre property would have consisted 65 acres of riparian, 17.7 acres upland, and 25.3 acres of wetlands. Another owner, McDonald's, would not accept the appraisal price. They subsequently sold approximately 1/4 of their property for development. This 322 acre property would have consisted 179 acres of riparian, 68.6 acres upland, and 74.4acres of wetlands.
