Great Peninsula Conservancy used funding from the Salmon Recovery Funding Board to acquire around 2.5 acres of a coastal inlet estuary near the head of McLane Cove, Pickering Passage, Mason County. The fee-simple acquisition of this property protects 1,200 feet of undeveloped shoreline, estuarine nearshore habitat, and riparian forest buffer. The property features older second-growth marine riparian forest that provides vegetation that enhances shade, stabilizes soils, and produces important food sources for migrating salmon, especially Puget Sound Chinook. McLane Cove is a pocket estuary that provides juvenile salmon with a low energy refuge and a physiological transition zone with lower salinity levels. It is utilized by Endangered Species Act listed Chinook salmon, chum salmon, and coho salmon, as well as cutthroat trout. This project builds previous efforts by Mason County Public Works to replace a culvert on a small tributary stream at the head of McLane Cove, and open up 3,500 feet of upstream habitat to salmonids. Great Peninsula Conservancy has developed a management plan for this property which addresses planned restoration/mitigation actions and appropriate uses for this property. Any permitted activities must be consistent with the protection of the natural resources and conservation values on the property. The land will be monitored annually to establish a record of natural changes and to watch for any problems.
