DESCRIPTION
This project focused on the stewardship of 11.2 acres of previously installed riparian plantings at the north end of Oakland Bay: 10. 4 acres on Deer and Cranberry Creeks at Twin Rivers Ranch Preserve and 0.8 acres on Malaney Creek at Oakland Bay County Park. These creeks are particularly important because they support runs of native summer chum, coho and Chinook salmons and steelhead and coastal cutthroat trout.
Prior to this project, degraded riparian buffers along one side of each creek had been planted with a diverse mix of native tree and shrub species to speed succession to mature forest and improve salmonid rearing habitat. During the course of this project, Capitol Land Trust and its partners maintained 8.2 acres of previously installed plantings (7.4 acres at Twin Rivers Ranch Preserve and 0.8 acres at Oakland Bay County Park), replanted 3.0 acres at Twin Rivers Ranch Preserve that had experienced high mortality rates, and removed invasive plant species from six acres of shoreline and riparian buffer outside the planting areas.

This project builds upon the two SRFB projects that conserved these high functioning Oakland Bay freshwater and estuarine shoreline sites (SRFB project #04-1464 and 07-1841).
