DESCRIPTION
The Trust for Public Land used this funding to acquire a $1,300,000 36.5-acre shoreline property on Oakland Bay in South Puget Sound. This acquisition of four parcels includes 1500' of natural, unarmored shoreline, 10.3 acres of marine riparian habitat, 4.2 acres of stream riparian habitat, and 22.0 acres of upland with forest and open areas. TPL transfered this property to Mason County to use this site for a low-impact, day-use, natural setting public park. Conservation as a park will maintain water quality, protect habitat for forage fish, and keep a natural shoreline with high-functioning ecological processes for juvenile salmonid rearing and migration. This project is a prioity of Oakland Bay and is a Tier 1 Regionally Significant project (South Puget Sound Prioritization Template) project and a Priority Conservation Area (The Oakland Bay and Hammersley Inlet Nearshore Habitat Assessment).
This project is supported by the Squaxin Island Tribe, Taylor Shellfish, People for Puget Sound, Capitol Land Trust, and the Oakland Bay Clean Water District, among many others.
