DESCRIPTION
The goals of the project were to enhance salmon habitat and access to high flow refugia in the "Middle Goldsborough" reach of Goldsborough Creek near Shelton, WA, Mason County. South Puget Sound Salmon Enhancement Group constructed multiple in-stream large woody debris structures to meet project objectives. A large log crib wall (160’ long) and log cluster were placed along the railroad bank to create pool habitat, provide cover, introduce large wood, and to replace a former bank stabilization project that utilized rip-rap rock. An Engineered Log Jam was placed on the edge of the left-bank thalweg upstream of the railroad to provide in-stream, covered pool habitat and to split high stream flows to engage the relict side channel, create flood refugia and promote floodplain function. The side channel was excavated to the grades shown in the design to promote flow-through events and fish accessibility. Wood was placed in the side channel to create pools and provide added cover. The riparian edge of the crib-wall and the surrounding construction footprint were either planted with native shrubs or were colonized by naturally recruiting native trees. Primary funding was through a tribal EPA grant, while SRFB funds were used as match and to supplement the project budget to ensure full completion. Project deliverables included full design, permitting, and implementation of the project. This project will benefit Coho Salmon, Chum Salmon, steelhead and Cutthroat Trout.
