DESCRIPTION
The South Puget Sound Salmon Enhancement Group completed the design and removal of a 210’ long by 15’ wide creosote pier (including decking and pilings), an attached 63' long by 15' wide dry dock, isoloated pilings from a 50' long by 15' wide old pier whose decking was already removed, and a ~350 foot long rock bulkhead on Squaxin Island in Mason County. In total, 54 creosote pilings were fully removed from the project area. Subsequent to the completion of the initial project, a scope amendment was completed that also allowed the completion of preliminary designs for a nearshore enhancement project at the "Collier House", a property near the Squaxin Island project site. The restoration project was completed with matching funds from the DNR's creosote removal program and, with the project now complete, the site is free of the bulkhead and pier. Engineering designs completed for the Collier House (by Coastal Geologic Services) nearshore project are now available to be used for funding solicitations and project planning. The completed construction project was hypothesized to increase salmonid survival primarily through the removal of toxic creosote from the environment and by enhancing nearshore processes through increased connectivity between the adjacent salt marsh, forage fish spawning beach, and other habitat features as a result of removing the pilings and rock bulkhead. Coho, Chinook, and chum salmon and steelhead trout are all expected to benefit. Pre-project conditions consisted of an abandoned pier and its associated protective bulkhead. The pier formerly provided access to a Tribal longhouse and cultural center that burned down and was abandoned in the early 1980’s. The pier also provided a semi-dry dock facility where Tribal members could work on boats at all but the highest tides. This facility on the pier was abandoned in the early 1990’s. Since that time the pier and site had largely been unused and unmaintained. A drift cell had been designated moving from south to north that supplies sediment to a surf smelt spawning beach adjacent to the proposed project (WDOE). The site is partially within and adjacent to two shorezone units that are variously rated as having: saltmarsh, subtidal vegetation, and forage fish spawning. The site is adjacent to a non-salmon bearing stream. Human induced stressors to the shorezone unit include: shoreline armoring, riparian loss, and docks/piers (NSPST).
