DESCRIPTION
Spring Creek is located near the mouth of Deer Creek and is an important salmon producing stream for the State as well as the Squaxin Island Tribe. The stream supports populations of resident salmonids, coho and chum. Limiting factors for fish on this stream include elevation and velocity barriers in the form of an undersized culvert and a concrete cascade structure. Both structures prohibit adult salmon migration upstream and block access to prime juvenile rearing habitat. This project has the potential to open up over one mile of critical salmon spawning and rearing habitat, which would in turn increase population numbers. Phase I, a project by Mason County, replaces the blocking culvert on Spring Creek. Phase II, the subject of this project, calls for the removal of a cement cascade structure (former by-pass for an abandoned trout farm, Beckstead property). The structure will be completely removed and replaced with an engineered five log weir design. A minimum of one mile of high quality spawning and rearing habitat will be made accessible as a result of this project and the adjacent culvert replacement project at the Agate Road crossing. The projects will be ready to implement as soon as permitting allows (@June 15) and will be completed by October 1, 1999.
